Our Story

In 1988 Smith and Partners opened for business from the sitting room of a period house in the Trent Valley. It was the first stepping stone in Malcolm Smith’s vision to create a firm which would specialise in the sale of country property to the polite exclusion of properties that did not fit the mould.

It was not long after that the firm had become noticed for its rapid growth and a refreshing reputation for giving straightforward no nonsense advice. Office premises were secured at 94 Friar Lane, uniquely the office did not have a fascia and was perceived to be ‘out of the way’ for most conventional estate agents. From this modest building a small number of interesting country properties were showcased, but the word continued to spread.

Each successful sale lead to another and the firm began to prosper, despite the recessionary times. In 1995 Ian Terry joined Malcolm Smith and became a partner in the business and in 1998 the firm acquired showroom premises at 100 Friar Lane, Nottingham and opened a second office in the historic Minster town of Southwell.

In the ensuing years some of the most valuable and interesting properties in the county were sold by the firm and the name ‘Smith and Partners’ became synonymous with country property sales and the many challenges of economic cycles, the advent of the internet and an ever-changing property landscape inspired Malcolm Smith and Ian Terry to lead the way in the country property market with their unique approach.

Today Malcolm and Ian, and their dedicated sales team, are relishing the challenge of driving Smith and Partners to the head of the field in 21st century estate agency…
